Leading equipment supplier MSC has made an impact with the delivery of a new compact mobile recirculating crusher.

Mobile Screening and Crushing NZ (MSC) provides the entire EvoQuip crusher line-up, which includes both the Bison jaw and Cobra impactor range.

EvoQuip’s size reduction crusher ‘Cobra 290R’ has been successfully processing alluvial gravel for a South Wairarapa quarry in Featherston owned and operated by PJ Warren Earthmoving.

Incorporated in 2001 to supply local contractors with all types of crushed and screened aggregate, the company was granted sole rights to extract gravel from a site on the Tauherenikau River.

In August 2020, PJ Warren Earthmoving was gained consent from the local regional council to undertake earthworks and associated discharges of sediment to the land at Underhill Road site.

With a brand new EvoQuip Cobra 290R impactor from MSC, PJ Warren Earthmoving is now making the most of this opportunity to supply more aggregate.

Director Peter Warren says: “The 290R crusher has proved an ideal machine to supply a spec’d product. We now can make a GAP 20, GAP 40 and GAP 65 and all by simply changing the machine’s screen media.”

Peter says he ordered the new 290R to keep up with increased demand, and worked closely with MSC for the selection of the right gear. “MSC was there to offer professional aftermarket support and technical advice – and we got it.

“The 290 impact crusher is the ideal combination of performance and low operating cost, the engine is both powerful and fuel efficient. A choice of pre-screen media provides the ability to produce accurately sized products for immediate use.”

MSC’s experience in crushing and screening ensures they provide equipment that runs at high performance and safely, says Peter.

“When considering a crusher, you can rely on MSC to analyse your application and recommend the most appropriate machine.”

Dan Meikle, MSC general manager, says the Cobra 290R is simple to operate, easily maintained and is a high performer for quarries and recycling companies looking to increase production.

“The Cobra 290R is a versatile and easy to use track mounted impact crusher that can operate in the most demanding of applications, such as reinforced concrete, recycled asphalt, construction and demolition waste and natural rock,” says Dan.

“The control system is simple to operate and set up time minimal, enabling quick crushing. The ground level access to the engine, hydraulics, service and refuelling points also makes maintenance easy for the operator.”

The integrated ‘Afterscreen system’ on the Cobra 290R ensures product specification is achieved with oversize material either being recirculated back to the crusher or stockpiled, Dan adds.

At the heart of the Cobra 290R is the Terex Impact Crusher with a rotor size of 1000mm x 1034mm. This impactor has been developed using components and technology from some of the company’s larger impactors within the Terex range.

Fitted as standard is a hinged inlet lid that greatly reduces the risk of material bridging at the feed-in point. Like the Cobra 230 crusher, the Cobra 290R also has two independent hydraulic controlled aprons that allow the operator to optimise material throughput and reduction.

This patented hydraulic overload protection system not only protects the crusher in the event of uncrushable material pieces entering the chamber, but it also minimises apron bounce and reduces the amount of oversize material passing through.

The tip speed of the rotor can be varied depending on the application and product requirements. Throughout the crushing process, the Cobra 290R constantly monitors the engine load and automatically regulates the feeder speed as required.

The Cobra 290R was designed with the operator in mind in terms of ease of use and serviceability, with ground level access to the engine, hydraulics, service, and refuelling points.

It is also available with the ‘wind sifter’ as an option, providing the ideal solution to remove contaminants such as plastic and wood from crushed C&D waste based on density and size.
MSC marketing manager Catrina Quinn says the Cobra 290R is the biggest crusher in its impactor range, while the full EvoQuip range offers great value by providing intuitive equipment that is simple to maintain, fuel efficient, and easy to transport.

“It provides the perfect solution for on-site recycling in urban areas and can be easily transported from job to job,” says Catrina.

“The control system is simple to operate and set up time is minimal, enabling quick crushing with little downtime. The ground level access to the engine, hydraulics, service and refuelling points also makes service/maintenance easy for the operator.”

EvoQuip’s Cobra range of impactors incorporates ease-of-use features with the operator in mind, Catrina adds, such as providing the ability to move the machine using a remote control from the excavator cab without shutting down the crusher.

MSC director Andy Meikle says: “Maintaining long-term relationships with customers, equipment operators and maintenance workers is part of the MSC service to help them increase productivity, improve product quality, and reduce operating costs."

Peter Warren from PJ Warren Earthmoving agrees. “Through its nationwide service and qualified technicians, MSC goes beyond just selling the machine to working with its clients to ensure optimum volume and tonnages are achieved,” he says.

“Receiving our new product was just the beginning of a great relationship with MSC’s responsive team offering the highest level of backup and customer care.

“On top of MSC’s professional service, the Cobra has also proved value for money and very cost-effective, so we have made the decision to order more gear.’’
