Scalping screens throwing a 6 G-force punchSponsored
The Terex EvoQuip Colt range of versatile scalping screens offers exceptional high capacity output and accurate separation for screening in various applications: topsoil, compost, wood, bark, green waste, sand, gravel, aggregates, recycling, construction and demolition.
These screens are highly efficient at operating in both heavy duty scalping and precision screening applications. A highly aggressive screen box is at the heart of these screening plants. The ‘G-Force’ acceleration generated by screens in the EvoQuip Colt range enables them to process a wide variety of products with high-capacity production. This includes difficult to screen applications which other machines often struggle to process. Distributed by Mobile Screening & Crushing NZ (MSC), GM Dan Meikle says: “The 6 G-force of acceleration at which the screenbox moves to the top and returns to the bottom of its respective stroke, aids the scalper to achieve very high production’’.
The Terex EvoQuip Colt scalping screens have well and truly proved themselves since the first one arrived in NZ seven years ago. With sizes ranging from the compact Colt 600 (280 tph) through to the Colt 1600 (600 tph) these high performance scalpers suit a wide range of operations.
Range of applications
MSC customer, Auckland based Total Soil Ltd acquired a Colt 600 to assist in producing high-quality garden and landscaping products. Owner Dave Rimmer speaks highly of the compact scalper: “I’m happy with the Colt, its product splits and the overall efficiency of the scalper. I get good clean product which we only screen once. We are really impressed with the quality and grade of finish in the stockpiles.’’ Total Soil says it bought the screen primarily for recycling of topsoil, and the processing of compost. However, the scalper is suitable for a range of applications including sand, aggregates and bark.
Rimmer says that in comparison to the screens he has had in the past, the capacity and maximum throughput of this Colt is far superior in tonnage. “The Colt is impressive with tonnage outputs; it can punch out stockpile volume at quicker rates per day than the other four screens we have used in the past.” Rimmer also relates his experience working with MSC: “…they have never failed to deliver on my expectations, and have always given tremendous support. The Colt has significantly increased daily productivity. We are happy with the powerful screening action of the screen and the products produced are then ready to market to our clients in NZ’’.
Another MSC customer based in the Central North Island recently bought the larger Colt 1600 scalping screen, with its 7m³ standard hopper capacity for their wood processing operation. “The plant has been configured exactly to the required product and production throughput specs and both MSC and the customer are delighted with the results”, says Meikle. “We take as much time as is required to make sure the throughput and quality of the finished product is maximised, the machine is set up and tuned to its full potential and the customer is fully appraised of all the features of the plant and is confident with all aspects of operation”.
“The heavy-duty Colt 1600 has some fantastic features which have made it the perfect fit for a number of our clients, including variable throw on the screenbox to give it a more aggressive shake, screen angling and the option of either 2-way or 3-way split configuration. Screen media can be changed quickly, making it possible to produce different products at short notice, when the need arises. It also comes with a feeder stop/start remote for the loading operator”, Meikle says.

The high capacity, versatile heavy-duty Colt 1600 scalper is especially designed to work in primary and secondary screening applications such as quarry and mining, construction demolition waste, sand, gravel, compost, top soil and coal. The plant has the capacity to process at a rate of up to 600 tonnes per hour, take up to a 600mm rock, and, being a tracked screen, is easy to move where most needed on site. It also comes with an apron feeder as standard. The screenbox can be ordered in 3 different configurations. It comes standard spec with a single shaft, variable throw screenbox but can also be ordered with a triple shaft screenbox for an extremely aggressive shake, and a flip flow technology screenbox for very wet and sticky product.
The EvoQuip Colt range also includes the Colt 800 with a 2.9m³ standard hopper capacity and throughput of up to 280 tph and the larger Colt 1000 with a 5m³ standard hopper capacity and throughput of up to 360 tph.
