Terex EvoQuip selected for Cook Islands airport upgrade

Easily transported - in Rarotonga

In early 2023, Infrastructure Cook Islands (ICI) initiated a search for crushing and screening equipment to support an upcoming project on Manihiki Island, part of the Cook Islands Pa Enua (Outer Islands).

The stunning atoll of Manihiki - 1203 km northwest of Rarotonga - has only been accessible to the most adventurous travellers. Fortunately, it will soon be much easier for visitors to experience Manihiki's pristine beaches with the Cook Islands Government soon beginning a large-scale upgrade to the island's airport runway. The runway upgrade will allow for larger aircraft and more frequent flights, opening up Manihiki and the surrounding northern Cook Islands like never before.

Due to Manihiki's remote location, the crushing and screening equipment for the project would need to be reliable, mobile and compact - but powerful enough to get the job done. And with any challenging operational environment, ease of use and maintenance was just as important to consider. After the comprehensive tender process was wrapped up, the machinery ICI ultimately decided best fitted requirements was a Terex EvoQuip Cobra 230R impact crusher and Colt 1000 scalping screen, both supplied by Mobile Screening & Crushing NZ (MSC).

Along the way MSC factored in the unique logistical challenges, from international shipping and safely unloading the equipment at a smaller port, through to the essential spare and wear parts needed for such a remote location. With 30 years of industry experience, MSC provided expert recommendations tailored to the project's requirements.

"This project represents a significant investment for the Cook Islands Government, so it was critical we supplied the right machinery," says Dan Meikle, MSC GM. "After seven years selling Terex EvoQuip products, we have absolute confidence these machines will perform exceptionally."

The Cobra 230R impact crusher will be crushing a mix of limestone coral and, combined with the screener, will be producing 3x products for the project. The Cobra impact crusher was an ideal fit for the project as it is compact, yet robust and able to work in a large variety of applications. It features a processing capacity of up to 230 TPH.

The Colt 1000 scalping screen will be working in sequence with the impact crusher to screen the coral to the required product specifications for the runway. It has a class leading acceleration of 6G and combined screen angling and 13.5ft x 4ft screenbox, and can achieve throughput of up to 360 TPH. The 1000 excels at screening fine sizes and also wet and sticky products.

In October 2024, Dan travelled to Rarotonga to train ICI's civil works team on operating and maintaining the EvoQuip equipment. MSC looks forward to returning in early 2025 to commission the machines upon their arrival on Manihiki Island, proud to contribute to this transformational project in such a stunning location.
