Introducing Phoenix Metalman RecyclingSponsored
Phoenix Metalman Recycling (PMR) is a 100 per cent NZ owned metal recycling, resource recovery, demolition and de-construction business operating nationwide. We service customers within the following sectors: engineering & manufacturing, automotive, battery supply, construction, demolition, import, export, energy and waste sectors and the general public.
PMR is Toitū Envirocare Net Carbon Zero certified – offsetting every truck kilometre, every equipment movement between and within our yards and demolition sites, every container movement to the destination port of our global recycling partners. In FY22, we recycled 99.39 per cent of all materials accumulated and processed.
Our mission is to ensure Aotearoa New Zealand's metal recycling industry leads in the environmental stewardship of an infinitely renewable resource. We advocate for and facilitate the recovery of metallic resources, divert those resources from landfills, whilst operating in an environmentally sustainable manner, ensuring those metallic products reach their recycling potential within their local and global circular economies. Due to our nationwide reach and our vertically integrated service we offer our clients a reduced carbon emissions service due to our convenient locations, efficient operations and reduced double handling of materials.
The metals we recycle are extracted from our demolition projects or collected from our nationwide branch network. On average over 8500 customers visit us every month to recycle. At our branches we sort, grade, process and package the metals for export to be recycled globally. The company also trades metals for clients throughout NZ, along with Asia and the South Pacific Islands. We manage more than 50 metallic products; we can work with clients to advise on how easy or difficult it is to recycle their products containing metals. We are NZ’s largest lead acid battery exporter. 98 per cent of lead acid batteries can be recycled in their global markets.
PMR’s evolution originated in 2013 when CMA Recycling was purchased by Eldon Reeve and a previous director. The company was rebranded in 2019, trading as Phoenix Metal Recyclers NZ Limited. In July 2021, Eldon Reeve (CEO) and Hilary West-Reeve (chief sustainability officer) – current owner operators, with a complimentary set of skills – facilitated the acquisition of Metalman, rebranding as Phoenix Metalman Recycling. Further acquisitions post Metalman of some of NZ’s 30+ years legacy businesses have extended the reach of the PMR network. Eldon and Hilary are working together to grow their business with a focus on recycling services, especially metallics, contributing to NZ’s waste and resource recovery circular economy. In March 2022, PMR acquired Wellington’s GMR Metal Recyclers NZ Limited. Julian O'Connell (previous owner of GMR) is remaining within the industry, collaborating with PMR in a strategic national role to continue to service the energy sector's recycling needs.
PMR established the demolition arm of the business in 2014 as clients increasingly were asking for de-construction of the metals at their sites. PMR is able to offer competitive pricing due to the offset of P&G costs across the recycling arm of the business and eliminating the 'middle man' on sell of metal. PMR can offer a cash rebate back to their clients; a benefit for operating a vertically integrated business model. PMR’s demolition contracts manager – Mark Levin – leads the nationwide demolition services team.
Our construction & demolition waste reporting system and site specific waste plans manage our demolition projects' waste and resource streams to ensure maximum diversion of waste to landfill. We offer an integrated service for NZGBC Greenstar accredited demolition projects. We have dedicated specialist health & safety and R&M teams utilising cutting edge equipment & methodologies to deliver our services across New Zealand. Sustainability data is the new currency of business – we provide independently certified weighbridge data for all loads we receive to businesses seeking accountability of their resource streams for recycling reporting criteria.
PMR is a multi-region, multi-site company. We can offer scale, hectares of site and locational convenience to our clients. This creates operational efficiency, reducing transport and processing costs which can be passed on. Due to Phoenix Metalman's scale within the recycling industry, we have pre-existing established relationships with waste-resource recovery industry leaders (concrete, glass, timber and other recycled products). We have successfully delivered demolition projects of all scales across NZ: most notably the recently completed Wynyard Point in Auckland’s CBD next to Westhaven – 39 tanks were demolished (the largest was 400t), along with other ancillary buildings. Other projects of interest include: 40,000m2 of glasshouses, redundant quarry infrastructure, power stations, viaduct infrastructure, steelworks mill, cool stores, multiple manufacturing plants and buildings.
The aforementioned PMR-GMR collaboration has created a specialist national infrastructure de-commissioning projects team. As a preferred contractor for 19+ years, GMR has undertaken many large scale projects throughout New Zealand. It holds expertise in the dismantling, removal and recycling of power and gas-related redundant assets and associated horizontal infrastructure, collecting from their clients' depots around the country, or managing the entire site substation decommissioning. A PMR-GMR team lead by GMR’s Julian O’Connell and PMR’s Simon Prendergast has been established to continue and scale the services to be offered to the energy infrastructure, NZ roading, petroleum, mining, smart energy and resources sectors.
